The “Kammerensemble Classic der Deutschen Oper Berlin” was founded in 1992 by musicians from the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The core ensemble—consisting of violin, flute, bassoon, cello, and piano—is expanded to include clarinet, horn, harp, or vocals, depending on the program.

The ensemble has made it its mission to perform lesser-known and forgotten works from the early Classical, Classical, and Romantic periods. For example, two sextets by Domenico Cimarosa, which were thought to be lost, were rediscovered and performed by Helge Bartholomäus, the ensemble’s founder.

Even the ensemble’s very first Berlin concert in 1993, held in the small hall of the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt, astonished and delighted audiences with works by rarely performed masters of the early Classical and Classical periods, thanks to its “homogeneous sound” and “excellent instrumentalists” (Der Tagesspiegel).
